Why Netflix is to Become Champion of Literary Adaptations

By March 3, 2017News, Television

There’s no denying that very few television companies produce adaptations as well as Netflix does and over the last couple of years they have produced some sensational series versions of our favourite books.

Recently the Series of Unfortunate Events adaptation thrilled readers, particularly fans of Neil Patrick Harris, and just a couple of weeks ago we brought you the news that Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why is coming to Netflix very soon. Even Netflix’s most popular show, Orange is the New Black is adapted from a memoir by the same name.

There’s no doubt Netflix has already staked its claim on the world of adaptations but until now they have never employed any literary scouts. All that is set to change as the streaming site has just employed international literary consulting company, Maria B Campbell Associates to advise on books suitable for adaptation. This move shows a clear intention from Netflix to concentrate on book adaptations, which is little wonder given the popularity of some of the adaptations we’ve seen already.

Maria B. Campbell was established in New York in 1994 and the literary company identifies adult and children’s books that they believe are suitable for adaptation to film and television, and from now onwards, they’ll be working for Netflix in this capacity. Included in this new arrangement is the translation rights in foreign markets for 23 major book publishers around the world.

If like me, you love seeing your favourite books brought to life on screen then this will be music to your ears. Netflix is already my favourite television medium thanks to their fantastic adaptations, and now it looks as though we’ll have even more to look forward to from the streaming site.
