Word of the Day – Eschew

By September 24, 2016Word of the Day

Eschew (verb)

ess-choo

Deliberately avoid using; abstain from.

Eschew comes from the Old French eschiver meaning dread, or shun. So to eschew something isn’t simply to avoid it, it’s a more powerful reaction than that.

Example sentences

“He eschewed violence in all its forms and would do his utmost to avoid confrontation.”

“She chose to eschew the current penchant for stick thin models and chose healthier representations of women for her catwalk show.”
