Does anyone else feel as though January has already been 740 days long? Not just me then, and the dark nights, dark mornings and rainy days here in the UK are doing nothing to chase springtime along any faster.
If like me you’re suffering the January blues then today, I’m recommending some blues busting books, guaranteed to lift your mood like little snowdrop shoots poking through the snow.
Little Women – Louisa May Alcott
Not a new release by far, but we promise you’ll love it and with a new movie just out there’s never been a better tale to read this tale of sisters, and bonds that last a lifetime.
The Likely Resolutions of Oliver Clock – Jane Riley
You’ll have to forgive us for this one as it doesn’t actually release until February 1st 2020, but Oliver Clock is guaranteed to warm your heart. Oliver Clock sounds a little like the male version of Eleanor Oliphant, in what is ultimately a heartwarming, very human, tale.
News of the World – Paulette Jiles
We’re mixing up the new and old for this list, and this 2017 novel from Paulette Jiles is sure to warm your heart. News of the World centres around a retired war hero and a Kiowa-raised white girl. The bond they forge is such a delight of family love. You’ll thank us for this recommendation!
The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes – Anna McPartlin
This exuberant novel is full of happiness, heartbreak and is a story about laughing through life’s trials and tribulations. The Last Days of Rabbit Hayes was released in 2015 and is guaranteed to lift your mood.
Motherwell – Deborah Orr
The first nonfiction book on the list, Motherwell is a memoir of surviving stifling love, the long shadows of family naysayers, and with humorous aplomb, about redemption and happiness. Out on 23rd January and available on pre-order now!
Lily and the Octopus – Steven Rowley
Released in 2015, Lily and the Octopus is a must read for anyone who has ever loved a dog! This national bestseller is a spirited and beautiful novel, guaranteed to enrich your life and lift the January blues!
American Dirt – Jeanine Cummins
Life-affirming, poignant and full of the best of humanity. American Dirt is out on January 20th and is the story of one woman and her family, trapped between a beloved bookstore and the drug cartels of Mexico.
I’ll Give You the Sun – Jandy Nelson
The story of twins who have always done everything together, as they grow up and go their separate ways is a gut-wrenching, yet beautiful and heartwarming tale. I’ll Give You the Sun released in 2015 and was one of our favourite reads of that year.
We hope you find some good suggestions there and we’ll be back with more recommendations lists soon. If you want to ensure you never miss any of these, subscribe now.
