Game of Thrones is over, and whether you were happy with the ending or you had criticisms, if you are a fan then there’s no doubt it’s been a major part of your life for almost a decade, longer if you read the books too.
Fantasy adaptations don’t always translate well to the screen but Game of Thrones seemed to thrill both readers and watchers alike and if you’re feeling GoT withdrawal then you may be looking for something to replace this brilliant series.
So today we’re looking at some other fantasy books that have just had, or are about to have their adaptation moment in the spotlight.
Bloodmoon
First and foremost we have to mention the Game of Thrones spin off, Bloodmoon only starts filming in June so you may have a while to wait yet. The show is to be set thousands of years in the past and so we think it could be tied into Fire and Blood, the prequel book from the series.
His Dark Materials
Adapted from the Philip Pullman series, His Dark Materials has already had a movie adaptation that flopped but HBO and BBC have taken up the mantel with an all-star cast, it’s coming soon and it looks promising! Watch the trailer here.
Lord of the Rings
We’ve already had a blockbuster movie adaptation and now Amazon is at the helm to bring even more stories from Middle Earth. We’re promised it won’t just be a remake of the movies, but just how much like the books will it be? Find out more here.
Chronicles of Narnia
There are unlikely to be quite as many deaths or as much bloodshed as Game of Thrones but we’re still really looking forward to the Chronicles of Narnia adaptation that is coming to Netflix.
The Kingkiller Chronicles
The Kingkiller Chronicles is a magical series, the book series isn’t yet complete but Showtime have already picked it up for an epic adaptation. Rothfuss is involved in the show so we’re hoping it’ll be a faithful adaptation but there’s no release date just yet.
Wheel of Time
Amazon has signed a deal to adapt the Wheel of Time series into an epic fantasy and we’re particularly excited about this one. Sadly Robert Jordan is no longer with us, so we hope the series is faithful to the books. You can find out more about this adaptation here.
American Gods
The original material is a single Neil Gaiman book, but the show, airing on Amazon and Starz is turning out to be pretty epic fantasy. You don’t have to wait for American Gods either, it’s already two seasons in with the third season confirmed too! For a taster of what to expect, I reviewed the book here.
Good Omens
Does it get any more fantastical than good angels and bad angels? Armageddon is upon us with this Neil Gaiman/Terry Pratchett novel, which is about to air on Amazon Prime! Watch a trailer here.
Preacher
We’re finishing with a graphic novel adaptation with Preacher. It’s not quite high fantasy like Game of Thrones but with complex characters and fantastic story lines it definitely fits the bill, and as it’s already on Amazon Prime, there’s no waiting either!
