Trump Cuts Funding for Libraries, ALA Fights Back with “Show Up for Our Libraries” Campaign

By March 15, 2025News, Political

President Donald Trump has signed an executive order cutting federal funding for the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), a move that could have devastating effects on libraries and cultural institutions across the United States.

The IMLS provides critical grants that support public libraries, literacy programmes, and access to information for underserved communities.

In response, the American Library Association (ALA) has launched the “Show Up for Our Libraries” campaign, urging the public to take action. The campaign calls on citizens to contact lawmakers, sign petitions, and advocate for continued library funding.

“Libraries are more than just books—they provide internet access, job resources, and community programmes,” an ALA spokesperson stated. “Cutting this funding threatens millions who rely on these essential services.”

The executive order has sparked backlash from educators, authors, and library supporters nationwide, many of whom see it as an attack on public knowledge and accessibility. As the debate unfolds, the ALA continues to rally support, reminding Americans that libraries are a cornerstone of democracy and lifelong learning.
