Coined by Robert Recorde, a Welsh mathematician and physician. Before the widespread use of exponents, mathematicians used words to describe powers of numbers. “Zenzic” represented the square, “zenzizenzic” the square of the square (fourth power), and “zenzizenzizenzic” the square of the square of the square (eighth power). Derived from the Italian word “censo,” meaning “squared,
