Uppity (adj)
up-i-tee
(disparaging, offensive) Affecting an attitude of inflated self-esteem; haughty; snobbish.
The etymology of uppity has a very racist past, used particularly to disparage Black people as “Not remembering their place as inferior” “Not offering the expected deference to white people”.
Example sentences
“I could hardly believe it when a troll called me uppity, but I’ll wear it with the same pride as the black people it was originally aimed at should.”
Admin note: I do not use the word uppity due to its racist connotations, and I am offering it as a #WotD for historical interest, rather than as a suggestion to add to your vocabulary.
