Bonnie Greer, Acclaimed Author, Playwright and Cultural Commentator, Dies Aged 77

By September 16, 2026Authors, News

Bonnie Greer, the British-American novelist, playwright, critic and broadcaster whose distinctive voice became a familiar presence in British cultural life, has died aged 77.

Her husband, David Hutchins, confirmed that she died on Tuesday evening following a brief illness.

A writer whose work spanned novels, theatre, memoir, literary criticism and broadcasting, Greer spent decades exploring questions of identity, race, history and belonging. She was also a passionate advocate for the arts and a familiar voice in conversations about literature and culture.

From Chicago to British literary life

Born in Chicago in 1948, Greer grew up on the city’s South Side, the eldest of seven children.

She studied playwriting under David Mamet before moving to New York to work in theatre. In 1985, she brought a play to the Edinburgh Fringe, eventually settling in Britain the following year and becoming a British citizen in 1997.

Her experiences on both sides of the Atlantic would shape much of her writing, particularly her interest in cultural identity, the experiences of Black women and the relationship between personal history and the wider world

A literary career that crossed boundaries

Greer’s debut novel, Hanging by Her Teeth, published in 1994, follows a Black American woman travelling through the United States and Europe in search of her father.

Her later works included Entropy, Obama Music, and A Parallel Life, her 2014 memoir.

She also wrote Langston Hughes: The Value of Contradiction, a biography exploring the life and work of the celebrated Harlem Renaissance poet.

Greer had a particular affection for James Baldwin, whose novel Go Tell It on the Mountain she first encountered at the age of 12. She later described Baldwin as the writer who had first moved her and continued to inspire her throughout her life.

Her literary interests extended beyond her own books. In 2019, she contributed to New Daughters of Africa, Margaret Busby’s landmark anthology celebrating the writing of women of African descent.

Bringing forgotten stories to the stage

Greer’s work in theatre and radio frequently explored lives and histories that had received too little attention.

Her radio play Marilyn and Ella Backstage at the Mocambo explored the relationship between Marilyn Monroe and jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald, including Monroe’s role in helping Fitzgerald secure a booking at a nightclub that had been reluctant to employ her.

Greer subsequently adapted the story for the stage as Marilyn and Ella.

Her other dramatic works included Munda Negra, which won the Verity Bargate Award, and BBC radio dramas about Rosa Parks and the protests following the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

A voice that refused to be confined

Beyond her writing, Greer became a prominent figure in British cultural life.

She served on the boards of the British Museum, Royal Opera House and London Film School, and was Chancellor of Kingston University.

She was appointed an OBE for services to the arts in 2010 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2022.

Her regular appearances on programmes including Newsnight Review and Question Time introduced her to audiences who might never have encountered her novels or plays.

Remembering Bonnie Greer

In announcing her death, her husband David Hutchins paid tribute to her intelligence, courage and distinctive voice, describing her as his partner, confidante and inspiration.

He also remembered her warmth, humour, generosity and extraordinary ability to bring people together.

Fellow novelist Bernardine Evaristo was among those paying tribute, recalling Greer’s prominence as a Black cultural commentator in Britain during the 1990s and 2000s.

For readers, Greer leaves behind novels, memoirs, criticism and plays that invite us to look more closely at the stories we tell about ourselves and the histories that shape us.

Her work reminds us that literature is not simply about the world as we know it, but about discovering the lives, experiences and perspectives that might otherwise remain unheard.

Bonnie Greer, 1948–2026.
