Publisher, Magic Cat, are publishing a newly illustrated re-issue of Margaret Atwood’s Middle Grade Novel, For the Birds. The independent UK publisher, with a U.S. imprint under Abrams, will publish the book from two-time Booker Prize winning author, Margaret Atwood in Spring 2027.
For the Birds, which was originally published in 1990 by Douglas & McIntyre, and was solely a Canadian release. The story about appreciating nature and the environment is a perfect fit for Magic Cat; a publisher that aims to engage with “kindness, togetherness, friendship, inclusivity,” as well as “Ideas about the future of our planet, about culture, activism, and mindfulness.”
“Our books inspire care for our world… and each other,” explain founders Rachel and Jenny.
“We’re acutely aware that today’s kids are growing up in a world of uncertainty that moves so fast, and needs more togetherness. We believe that that magic happens when families spend time around a book, as kids engage in thoughts and conversations that help them grow into kind and aware 21st century adults.”
In Magic Cat’s reimagined edition, Atwood’s words will be accompanied by illustrations by Júlia Sardà. The book also includes a new foreword by Atwood, and ornithology facts from renowned birder and broadcaster, David Lindo, a long-time friend of the author.
For the Birds tells the tale of Samantha, who discovers a new-found appreciation and understanding of birds when she is magically transformed into one herself. The book was reportedly initially inspired by Atwood’s partner Graeme Gibson, who had purchased a home on Pelee Island; a stopover for migrating birds in North America.
“It’s estimated that North America has lost over three billion birds in the last 50 years,” Atwood said in a statement. “Graeme [Gibson] and I already knew about the falling numbers back in the 1980s. What was killing them? What sort of obstacle course did they have to run on their journey? And what could we humans do to help? That is why I wrote For The Birds, so long ago. Its message has only become more urgent over time.”
Publication of For The Birds by Margaret Atwood is slated for 23rd March 2027 in the U.S. and 25th March 2027 in the UK. World English rights to the book were negotiated by Jenny Broom, co-founder of Magic Cat, with Karolina Sutton at Creative Arts Agency (CAA).
