Hit drama-comedy series, The Walsh Sisters, based on the novels by Marian Keyes, is set to return to TV screens in series two. The Irish writer’s novels were previously adapted for a six-part series, which aired on the BBC in 2025, and soon, the flawed but ultimately relatable characters will return in a second season, with a further six episodes to enjoy.
The adaptation is inspired by the novels of best-selling, award-winning author, Marian Keyes, which follow the ups and downs in the lives of five sisters and their dysfunctional family living in Dublin. The first novel in Keyes’ collection, Watermelon, was published in 1995. In the years that followed, a further seven novels were published, the latest of which, My Favourite Mistake, was published in 2024.
Series two of The Walsh Sisters will be based on the books: The Mystery of Mercy Close (2012) which centres Helen Walsh, and Angels (2002) which centres Maggie Walsh. Stefanie Preissner continues as creative lead and writer on the upcoming series.
A press release from the BBC Media centre reveals: “Series two sees Rachel step outside the family bubble to navigate recovery on her own terms, but an encounter with a familiar face tests her newfound independence; Claire defies the traditional expectations placed on her as a mother compared to her ex’s responsibilities as a father; Maggie’s quest to become the perfect family takes an unexpected turn at a marital crossroads; Helen becomes overprotective of her sisters while struggling with her emotional wellbeing; and Anna tries some unusual methods to get over heartbreak.
“Individually, all five sisters are forced to confront their true identities as the roles in life they’ve previously played seemingly no longer fit. Meanwhile, Daddy Walsh remains blissfully oblivious to the family drama, focused entirely on his quest to land a part in the local amateur dramatic musical—much to the exasperation of Mammy Walsh. At its heart, the series remains true to its signature ‘Walsh dynamic’ with a fierce, hilarious, and unbreakable bond of sisterhood.”
Production on series two is reportedly now underway but an official air date has yet to be confirmed by the BBC.
