Last Summer, we reported the news that Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, House of Cards) and Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings, Captain Fantastic) were set to star in a film called Green Book. Inspired by a true story, the film follows a white driver as he chauffeurs a famed black musician on a tour through the deep south of the United States. The film takes its name from Green Books, which were published in the early to mid 20th century and were travel guides that informed black travellers in the US of where they could find accommodation, restaurants, and gas stations which would serve them in segregated America.
The film was released late last year and received a strong response from moviegoers and critics alike. As award season approached, it began picking up nominations, including several Academy Awards. Green Book was nominated for four Oscars in total, Best Picture, Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing.
Mahershala Ali won the award for Actor in a Supporting Role, the film also won Original Screenplay, and of course it went on to win the coveted Best Picture award, where it was competing with Black Panther, BlacKKKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favorite, Roma, A Star is Born, and Vice. Viggo Mortensen lost out to Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddy Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody when it came to Best Actor.
