Clab-ee-doo
A large dark mussel; especially the northern horse mussel, Modiolus modiolus.
Early 19th century; earliest use found in John Galt (1779–1839), novelist. From Scottish Gaelic clab-dubh (plural claba-dubha), lit. ‘black open mouth’ from clab open mouth + dubh black.
