Sad news this morning as news is released that author and former soldier Luis Carlos Montalvan has been found dead in a hotel room at the young age of 43.
Luis served 17 years in the US army and received two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart for his bravery during his two tours of Iraq before retiring as Captain in 2007. He subsequently became a strong critic of the war in Iraq and a spokesperson and advocate for those wounded in the conflict and even appeared on the David Letterman show.
Luis’ family has released a statement about Luis saying ‘He was an extremely dedicated activist nationwide for multiple causes, including rights and benefits of veterans and the disabled, as well as the promotion of service dogs,’
‘His spirit lives on through his family and friends, Tuesday, his writings, and all the people he touched during his years of service to his country and his humanitarian work.’
Montalvan’s book Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him is a memoir that describes how Luis, who was battling to recover from the physical and emotional wounds he suffered during his time in the army and Tuesday, a Golden Retriever who had lived among prisoners and in a home for troubled boys resulting in a deep mistrust of humans would come together to heal one another.
After the resounding success of his first book Montalcan would go on to write several children’s books and his second memoir Since Tuesday is due to be released in May 2017.
No cause of death has been released as yet but Police say there are no signs of foul play or suicide.
