“It’s a simple concept, of course, but what makes this a success is that it’s written in such a wholeheartedly convincing style.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

It is London 1812 and the ambission of Lady Helen Wrexhall is to make her way into polite regency society and find a suitable husband. Her plans go somewhat awry however, when Lord Carlston steps on the scene and introduces her to a darker world than she ever could imagine – one full of demons and conspiracies.

When I picked up this book, I have to admit I was skeptical. I wrongly judged a book by its cover. However, I absolutely loved this book.

The author has done a great deal of research on this era and paints an amazing picture of London in describing the sights and smells, and makes you feel as if you have stepped back in time to the gossipy and highly judgemental regency society.

There is a little bit of romance however the main focus is Lady Helen’s self-discovery and the tough decisions she must make. Throw in some demons, and this book for me ticked off every box.

This is the first book in a trilogy and the thing I hate the most is that I have to wait for the next book. I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves a bit of Pride and Prejudice mixed with Mortal Instruments. Will definitely be re-reading this one!!
