“Gudenkauf proves herself the master of the smart, suspenseful small-town thriller that gets right under your skin.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

25 years ago, 15 year old Eve Knox was murdered in the caves of a small town. Her body was discovered by her best friend Maggie and Eve’s little sister Nola. Although they had suspects, no one was ever arrested for the murder.

Jump to the present and Maggie is now a detective and also 7 months pregnant. Some kids find new evidence that relates to Eve’s murder and Maggie takes on the task of re-examining the case. Secrets and rumors that have been long buried are brought to the surface. Maggie is re-examining the several suspects and they all seem to have motive and means. Being personally involved gives Maggie an insight to the case that wasn’t originally revealed, but will it help now?

Told in a rotating point of view. Chapters are headed with the character and time which makes it easy to transition between chapters. Eve in the past (we get to relive her last day); Maggie in the present; Nola – present and past and some transcripts from the original case files.

It’s a good mystery. The reader is presented with several possibilities and they are all good ones. I enjoyed it. It was quick and easy and suspenseful. I was ultimately satisfied with the conclusion.
