“Porter’s fantastic debut novel is a whirl of characters spidering outward through time and space. . . . Beautifully written and intricately plotted.”

NO MAJOR SPOILERS

This excellent debut is a story about two families and then branches out to the people important to their lives. James Samuel Vincent is a well to do Manhattan attorney and Agnes Miller is an extremely bright and beautiful woman.

Their two stories along with their offspring gives us a rich and evolving story that takes place between the 1950’s and President Obama’s first term. It tells of interracial marriages, infidelity, and loyalty as a group of people try to live their lives in times of great change.

The book is told in flashbacks, moving back and forth between the decades but the stories run true and will keep you reading until the end. Eddie Christie, the Vietnam Vet who marries Agnes and brings her back to his Italian neighborhood in the Bronx is particularly compelling. Her life will carry the book as many of its most interesting characters will come through her.

A terrific first effort, highly recommended.
