Just finished The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris. Debut novel.
This is the story of Nella Rogers, who is the only black woman working at Wagner Books. She is an assistant to an Editor named Vera. Then one day a new black woman is hired. Hazel is from Harlem, very outgoing and a take charge kind of person. Shortly into their relationship Nella starts to become uneasy about Hazel as it seems she is moving in on Nella’s responsibilities. And then notes start appearing, urging Nella to leave Wagner, Now!
This will catapult the story to a mystery as Nella tries to track down the letter writer, while protecting her job.
The book has a slight twilight zone feel to it as the investigation heads to a climax. The way the two black woman are portrayed in the work place will bring back memories to anyone who has ever felt a little intimidated by a new colleague in the work place.
A good first effort and a nice summer read.
