BBC Documentary to Air on the History of Magic to Mark Potter Anniversary

A BBC documentary on the History of Magic from the world of Harry Potter is to air on BBC 2. Harry Potter: A History of Magic will show as part of an Arts series that takes a look at the lives of artists and their inspiration.

The series will follow the 20th anniversary exhibition at the British Library starting in late October where the public will be able to access ancient texts, artefacts and artwork. The documentary will unveil all things magical, the history and myths that inspired the Potterverse, magical objects and the folklore at the heart of the Harry Potter series.

Those who can’t make it to the exhibition will especially enjoy the documentary, which may be the best chance to get a look at these original drafts, drawings and other items from Rowling’s personal archive. Included in the documentary will be readings from famous fans, recreating spells and magical moments from the series, Quidditch commentary, and real life wandmakers, and an interview with the author herself.

The documentary was commissioned for BBC 2 by Patrick Holland, Controller, BBC Two and Mark Bell, Head of Commissioning BBC Arts, and the Executive Producer is Janet Lee. The Producer/Director is Jude Ho for BBC Studios. We don’t yet know when Harry Potter: A History of Magic will air, but we’ll be back with that news once we have it.

If you do prefer to read your history rather than watch it then there are two new Harry Potter books coming in October, offering an encyclopaedic look at the Potterverse. These new releases are also planned around the British Library Exhibition and will be out in October.
