And here we are at the end of another year and our final On This Day in Literature post for 2016. Every month we look back over 5 decades of literature to see what was hot in the new releases of previous years. December is always a good month for literature with so many Christmas releases so we should be in for some good suggestions!
So here we are, for the final time in 2016 looking back over 50 years of December releases. Maybe some of these will trigger some memories, particularly if you were eagerly awaiting the release!
December 2006
Hannibal Rising – Thomas Harris
If you eagerly followed the Hannibal Lecter series in book form then on this week in 2016 you may well have been eagerly awaiting the fourth book in the series, Hannibal Rising, released on 5th December 2006.
December 1996
Drums of Autumn – Diana Gabaldon
1996 was an exciting year for Diana Gabaldon fans as the fourth book in the Outlander was released in the first week of December with Drums of Autumn.
December 1986
Contact – Carl Sagan
When released in December 1986, Contact was a book set in the future. In December, 1999, a multinational team journeys out to the stars, to the most awesome encounter in human history. Who — or what — is out there?
December 1976
Raise the Titanic – Clive Cussler
Brutal storms, Soviet spies and a ticking clock give Raise the Titanic page turner status as Dirk Pitt attempts to raise the shipwreck of the century. Cussler was big during the 70s and 80s with many releases, all in true adventure swashbuckling style.
November 1966
The Magic Finger – Roald Dahl
It was December 1966 when Dahl’s The Magic Finger was published, and while it hasn’t stood the test of time as well as other stories it’s a lovely tale about a little girl who hates hunting. In true Dahl style the kids are the heroes and the grown ups are pretty horrid!
And there we are for another month, January will start with 2007 releases as we move into a new decade in our 50 years of literature spot.
