Gay romance novel, Boyfriend Material, to receive TV adaptation

Announced by Deadline, it has been confirmed that Alexis Hall’s gay romance novel, Boyfriend Material, will be getting the TV adaptation treatment. The production company A24 UK, known for series including Euphoria and Such Brave Girls, has reportedly optioned the TV rights to Hall’s novel.

First published in 2020, Boyfriend Material centres Luc O’Donnelly – the son of two 80s rock stars – whose life is messy. That is until he meets barrister Oliver Blackwood and an unlikely romance blossoms. The novel is the first in Hall’s ‘London’s Calling’ trilogy, followed by 2022’s Husband Material and Father Material which is due to publish in June this year. Boyfriend Material became a break-out literary star thanks to BookTok, and the series has since been published globally in more than 50 editions and multiple languages.

Alexis Hall is an English author of urban fantasy, science fiction, and LGBTQ romance. His other works include The Affair of the Mysterious Letter, Winner Bakes All, and many more. Hall’s work has also been nominated for the 26th, 28th, and 29th Lambda Literary Awards in the category of Gay Romance.

Sharing the news on Instagram, Hall wrote: “I have a little bit of news that I’ve been dying to share with you all. I hope you’ll find it as exciting as I do. A24 UK has optioned the rights for Boyfriend Material and want to make it into a tv series!

“This is absolutely thrilling in ways where it feels scary to want something so much. But what this news means on a practical level is that we’re only at the very, very beginning of an exceptionally long and uncertain process.

“The reality is, books are optioned all the time, with only a small percentage actually making it to the big and small screen. So, while I don’t know whether this will become a reality, what I do know is that Luc & Oliver are in the best and safest hands with the team at A24.

“For now, we wait. I think it’s only right and proper that we pass the time with some pterodactyl screeching and daydreaming.”
