Most of these made me smile but horrors I realised I have no idea what a dangling participle is (although it sounds decorative) and I still don’t get the Oxford comma. I did do English Language to “O level” at school but in my defence it was more than 50 years ago.

The Oxford comma is one of my favourites ever since I realised why we have it! The best way to explain it is with a sample sentence like this one found in a novel: “This book is dedicated to my parents, Ayn Rand and God” The sentence, without an Oxford comma, makes it seem like the writer’s parents are Ayn Rand and God (YIKES), but if an extra (Oxford) comma is added it makes more sense: “This book is dedicated to my parents, Ayn Rand, and God.”

      Hope that helps!

A woman walks into a bar and asks for a double entendre, so the barman gives her one.
