Reading With Snoopy and Friends

By January 3, 2018November 26th, 2019Literature

Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and all the gang have seemingly been around forever. For many of us they have been an integral part of our childhoods and beyond. Their creator, Charles M. Schulz, created the world of Peanuts in 1950, publishing his first strip on the 2nd of October that year. Nearly 18,000 comic strips have been published from its creation to its end in February 2000, and is said to be one of the longest stories ever told.

The Peanuts comic strips have been compiled into many books over the years, from compilations of the newspaper strips, to brand new adventures. They even star in their own ‘Ready To Read’ stories that help children with their level 2 literacy education, and in Scholastic’s English Language Teaching resources for primary schools.

Through the decades, hundreds of Peanuts books have been published. For a while the creator, Charles M. Schulz, held back from publishing his first few years of strips in a book as the characters weren’t quite honed to perfection yet. Thankfully he gave in and those classic strips were published in The Complete Peanuts: 1950-52.

In January 2000 the Peanuts comic strip dailies ended, and in February 2000 so did the Sunday strip. To celebrate and commemorate the loss of a daily dose of Charlie Brown and friends, this special anniversary book was published.

Nearly everybody loves Snoopy, Charlie Brown is in a close second, but Woodstock has always been my favourite of the gang. He may only be understood by Snoopy but he has a big voice, and is ridiculously cute. This book gives us a volume dedicated to this little yellow guy, and his sidekick Snoopy.

“Charles M. Schulz’s approach to cartooning was to take out the extraneous details and leave in only what’s necessary…”

This must-have for Peanuts’ biggest fans was timed for the 65th anniversary of the comic strip. It contains rare and unpublished original art and never-seen-before developmental work. The focus is on Schulz’s artistry and is a real appreciation for the creation of a comic strip.
