I can’t believe I am actually typing this but thirty-three years after the publication of The Handmaid’s Tale and on the back of the hugely successful television series, Margaret Atwood has confirmed that she is writing a sequel!
The author announced the news on Twitter today and gave some information about the upcoming book, which is to be called The Testaments. Here’s what she said:
Yes indeed to those who asked: I’m writing a sequel to The #HandmaidsTale. #TheTestaments is set 15 years after Offred’s final scene and is narrated by three female characters. It will be published in Sept 2019. More details: https://t.co/e1umh5FwpX pic.twitter.com/pePp0zpuif

As you can see, Atwood said the inspiration for The Testaments is ‘everything you’ve ever asked me about Gilead and its inner workings’, the other inspiration is ‘the world we’ve been living in’.
The book will be set fifteen years after Offred’s final scene and is narrated by three female characters. Publishing is expected on 10th September 2019 and The Testaments is already available for pre-order.
If you’re like me and you’ve been watching the television show then you’re probably wondering how closely the sequel will run to season 2 of the show, as this is set 15 years later and Atwood is working on the show, we’re assuming it’ll all tie together.
Praise be!
