Former first lady, Michelle Obama, is donating over $500,000 to female education charities around the world.
In a statement released earlier this week, Michelle Obama revealed that she plans on donating over $500,000 earned from the sales of merchandise around blockbuster memoir Becoming. The donation will go towards funding projects across the world initiated by The Obama Foundation, specifically projects in South East Asian nation Vietnam.
Michelle said in a statement:
“Over the past year I’ve been incredibly blessed and humbled by the response to my book, and I’m proud to channel that enthusiasm toward girls around the world. My hope is that this donation will help more bold and brilliant girls reach their fullest potential, continuing upward on their path toward becoming the women they are meant to be.”
The stats don’t lie- according to UNESCO, the gender disparity still exists despite hard work to change it.
Sadly, across the world girls are still less likely than boys to even set foot in a classroom, despite the tremendous progress made over the past few decades. Michelle Obama’s donation will help girls from Ethiopia to Vietnam to get the education many children across the USA take for granted.
