Neil Gaiman’s ‘Chivalry’ Getting Graphic Novel Adaptation

Chivalry is a humorous story by Neil Gaiman which tells the tale of an elderly British widow who unwittingly purchases the Holy Grail from a second-hand shop. The elderly woman soon starts receiving visits from an ancient knight who hopes to win the Holy Grail by enticing her with other ancient relics and soon, the widow sets off on an epic adventure.

The graphic novel adaption of Neil Gaiman’s Chivalry is a new project from Dark Horse Comics which sees Neil Gaiman collaborating once again with artist, Colleen Doran. The pair previously worked together on the recent graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s 1994 short story, Snow, Glass, Apples, for which the won an Eisner.

“I’ve wanted to do an adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s ‘Chivalry’ ever since he sent a draft of the story to me at about 1 AM via fax machine decades ago,” Colleen Doran said in a statement. “It is one of Neil’s loveliest, most charming stories, and I cried with happiness when I learned I would get to do the adaptation. I wear my art on my sleeve throughout, bringing Golden Age illustration styles and Illuminated Manuscript studies to the work. It’s a Holy Grail project for me. I sincerely hope it brings joy to people.”

“Colleen Doran set the world of comics abuzz (and then cleaned up come awards season) for her adaptation of Snow, Glass, Apples,” added Neil Gaiman. “Now she’s created a whole new style to tell the story of Mrs. Whitaker and the Holy Grail, and I’m thrilled with every page she sends me. I can’t wait until the world sees what she’s done.”

Dark Horse will publish Chivalry, the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Colleen Doran on 8th September 2021.
