Tom Hanks to Publish Short Story Collection

By February 22, 2017Authors, New Releases, News

Tom Hanks has announced that he has turned his hand to fiction and is to publish a collection of short stories later this year. Uncommon Type: Some Stories is due out in October and is the first collection from the Hollywood start, comprising some seventeen tales.

The title nods to the theme of the collection, which will be typewriters, with each tale revolving around the machines that are now all but obsolete. Hanks has previously admitted a passion for the machines even fronting an app Hanx Writer, which allows the digital generation to produce facsimile typescript.

It’s not Hanks’ first foray into writing, this idea has been in the works since the actor published a story in the esteemed New Yorker magazine in 2014, catching the eye of editor in chief, Sonny Mehta. The editor was impressed with the actor’s voice and storytelling skills, and now there’ll be even more stories to enjoy.

Hanks says he started writing in 2015 and worked on them for two years. He says he wrote everywhere while filming and this collection was written in New York, Berlin, Budapest and other places around the world, on planes, in the office, and anywhere he could sit and write.

The UK edition and US edition of Uncommon Type: Some Stories will be published simultaneously by William Heinemann and Knopf respectively. The audio book version will be read by the author.

I’m not always struck with celebrity authors, but I quite fancy this collection, and whatever I think, it’s all but guaranteed to be a bestseller!
