$1.5 million paid at auction for rare Batman comic book

A Detective Comics (DC) comic book from 1939 was sold at auction for $1.5 million.

The DC comic #27 boasts the first appearance of Batman, and was the highest price ever paid for a Batman comic book according to the auction house Heritage Auctions.

The record was previously held by a copy of the same comic and was sold for $1.075 million 10 years ago.

“I’m not at all surprised at the result,” Heritage’s VP Barry Sandoval told journalists. “After all, this is one of the best copies you will ever see of one of the most important comic books ever published.”

According to CGC, there are seven unrestored copies of Detective Comics #27, including these two, in existence today- hence the massive price tag.

“While any copy of this key comic is something special, we think this one stands up extremely well against any we’ve seen offered to the public,” the Heritage’s description of the comic read. “The yellows on the cover are clean and un-smudged, and few surviving copies can make that claim. And notice that the back cover is also appealingly clean. The book is also well-centred, with none of the back cover ad wrapping around to the front. Also note that this book has no codes or markings of any sort, which can be said of very few 1939 comics!”

Back in 1939a copy of Detective Comics #27 would set you back a mere 10¢, and adjusted for inflation the comic was only $1.87- far less than comic prices today.
