Killing Eve and Doctor Who star Susan Lynch and Charlatans singer Tim Burgess have temporarily closed a bookshop in Gloucester. Cornell Books in High Street, Tewkesbury has been taken over for three days to be the filming location for Susan Lynch’s directorial début and Tim Burgess’ acting début.
The short film titled The Bookshop will star Burgess in the lead role, as bookshop owner Leonard. In an interview for Gloucestershire Live, Susan Lynch explains the inspiration and story behind the film. Sitting beside Burgess with a bookshelf backdrop, Lynch tells us, “I saw Tim in concert in the Charltons and what struck me about his energy on stage is that he’s like so many different people. So, the inspiration for The Bookshop came from all the different roles that I saw Tim be in the Charlatans and we’ve sort of transferred that idea of fantasy into a very beautiful fable about a guy who works in a bookshop whose got demons from his past and he faces those demons through the other people that come in to the bookshop.”
Caroline Cornell from Cornell Books has been excitedly tweeting throughout the filming at the bookshop, showing her Followers shop’s front room transformed into make-up room and joking that the store never looked tidier. Now, Cornell Books is back to business as usual, although Caroline tweeted, “We will miss our film friends.”
Hopefully, the publicity this short film will direct towards Cornell Books will help this independent bookshop continue to thrive. While there is currently no news on a release date, we are certainly excited to see the short film when it comes to our screens. Until then, he’s a sneak-peak behind the scenes from BBC Gloucestershire’s Dominic Cotter:
