By March 28, 2019News, Political

Michelle Obama’s memoir, Becoming, certainly caused a stir upon release. In the first fifteen days it became the bestselling books of 2018 and soon after Barnes and Noble made it book of the year 2018. Now it’s on track to become the most popular memoir ever released, according to its publisher.

Becoming, first published just five months ago has just surpassed 10 million copies sold and publishers Bertelsmann say that they believe that the figure would make it the most popular memoir ever released.

Neilsen who track UK book sales say that the book is currently number eleven on the top twenty bestselling biographies and memoirs, which tracks sales since official records began in the late 90s. In the UK, Becoming has sold 618,000 copies and is beaten by A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer, which is the top selling autobiography in the UK having sold 1.1 million copies.

In Becoming, Michelle Obama talks of her experiences from childhood, work and motherhood, through to her time in the White House as America’s First Lady. She also reveals her marriage problems with Barack and how after a miscarriage, they used IVF to conceive their children. She also uses the book to criticise the current US president Donald Trump stating that she can never forgive him for putting her family’s safety at risk over his championing the ‘birther’ theory that Obama was not born in the US.

Becoming has been praised for its universal appeal across genders and ages and is still selling well, putting it on track to become one of the best selling memoirs of all time.
