I built a reading den (nook) the other day for my niece and daughter, they loved it and disappeared for hours. So with the summer holidays coming up and frazzled parents everywhere needing five minutes for a coffee and cake break we thought we’d show you some of the best, easy to make book nooks for children (or us, we can squeeze in after they’re in bed surely?).
Do you have a small built in cupboard/storage space? Take off the doors, add in a curtain, a fluffy rug, some cushions and lights and voila, a magical den for your children to lose themselves in.
This one’s a favourite of mine, sturdy, movable and simple to make.. Just some tab top curtains, some pieces of wood and off you go.

Ok so they haven’t used this as a reading nook but it works just as well and who hasn’t got a hula hoop floating around somewhere?
Ok, Ok I know this isn’t an ‘easy’ reading nook but look at it! I’d have loved this as a child.. I’d love one now!
Sometimes the simplest option is the best. The classic sheet over your washing line, perfect for a temporary summer reading nook.
Another simple, yet beautiful nook. A bed canopy and a big round cushion.. That’s it
A table nook, got a dining table? Got bed linen? You could make it as simple or as complicated as you want, look at some of these beautifully made slip covers.
A beanpole nook! Seriously, how wonderful is this? Imagine reading Jack and the Beanstalk in here. Not only is it a nook it’s a practical structure too, perhaps you could even get the children to build/grow their own hideaway.
How could we forget the good old pillow fort? There are no instructions needed for these, grab some sofa cushions, pile them up and disappear for hours on end.
Finally, the simplest but best reading nook of all for your children. Your lap.
