The Strand Bookstore is possibly the most famous bookstore in the USA. Situated in New York City the store features eighteen miles of books, and while they may be closed right now due to the Coronavirus pandemic, they are still posting on social media and have just posted this list of books that document the oppression of black people in the USA.
Today’s post is in response to the death of George Floyd, but already I’m wondering if I should write this in a more neutral way so it can be shared in the future, because the names may change but the story stays the same, and the systematic prejudice towards black men in the USA just has to stop. No one should die for jogging, for walking down the street, for being arrested for a non violent crime, but here we are, and with a president who seems set to fan the flames, it’s a sad indictment on a country that claims to be the land of the free.
