We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. We’re moving along now, covering each year at a time and we’re almost finished with the 1930s now as we feature the bestselling books of 1939, and what you were reading instead.

Lots happened in 1939 but the year was dominated by Hitler’s invasion of Poland, by the declaration of war by Britain and France against Germany, and by the establishment of Auschwitz.

So here they are, the ten top selling books of 1939 as the world went to war. We’ve also included some well known books that didn’t make the list.
