We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. Today we start a new decade, as we countdown to the end of a century and a millennia with 1996!

All eyes were on the UK in 1996 as the Prince of Wales, and Princess Diana divorced, and mad cow disease hit the country, devastating the livestock market and making many people sick. In West Africa a meningitis epidemic killed many children. In online news, Ask Jeeves launched and for the first time ever, online auction site eBay changed buying and selling forever.

Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1996, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
