A Selection of Wise Prose from Rumi

Persian poet and mystic, Jalal al-din Rumi, known today simply as Rumi, was born during the Islamic Golden Age on 30th September, 1207. His place of birth is claimed by two places, both Balkh (present-day Afghanistan) and Wakhsh (present-day Tajikstan) which were both part of the Khwarezmian Empire.

Rumi’s influence transcends borders, cultures, divisions and religions and even today he is loved around the world. Almost the entire Muslim world has great appreciation for his spiritual legacy and his poems have been widely translated into many of the world’s languages. Rumi has also been described as the ‘most popular poet’ and the ‘best selling poet’ in the United States.

Rumi wrote mostly in Persian, but also wrote prose in Turkish, Arabic, and Greek. His influence is seen in the literary traditions of the Ottoman Turkish, Chagatai, Urdu and Pashto languages. Today we’re going to take a look at some of that prose, in English and some of our favourite passages.

“Sorrow prepares you for joy. It violently sweeps everything out of your house, so that new joy can find space to enter. It shakes the yellow leaves from the bough of your heart, so that fresh, green leaves can grow in their place. It pulls up the rotten roots, so that new roots hidden beneath have room to grow. Whatever sorrow shakes from your heart, far better things will take their place.”
