We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. We’re moving along now with more than thirty years covered but it may be a while yet before we’ve completed the entire list.
We’re covering each year at a time and today we’re into a brand new decade as we cover 1950.
1950 saw the start of the American boom, kids watched television in the suburbs as President Harry Truman kept an eye on the Cold War. The first Peanuts comic strip appeared, as did the first credit cards, taking the US into a period of prosperity. The year also saw North Korea invade South Korea, causing tensions that still stand today. In the UK a general election took place and Labour leader Clement Attlee took the position of Prime Minister after Churchill’s war years.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1950, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1950 also saw the release of Isaac Asimov’s, I, Robot, and Patricia Highsmith’s Strangers on a Train
