Beren and Lúthien available for pre-order now
Good news Tolkien fans, HarperCollins has announced that Beren and Lúthien will be published in 2017, one hundred years after it was first written by Tolkien in 1917. Referenced in The Lord of the Rings, the two lovers appear in The Silmarillion and are an Elf and a man who fall in love with one another. Their story is echoed in The Lord of the Rings by the relationship between Aragorn, a mortal man, and Arwen the immortal Elf.
As Entertainment Weekly reports, the new book will be the story that first appeared in The History of Middle Earth and will feature passages from different versions of the tale along with illustrations by famed Tolkien illustrator Allan Lee. The book will be edited by Tolkien’s son Christopher Tolkien.
The story of Beren and Lúthien is not just an important part of Middle Earth’s lore, but also held a very special place in Tolkien’s heart. In a letter to his son after his wife’s death, Tolkien wrote: “She was the source of the story.” Tolkien and his wife share a grave and each of them feature the name Beren and Lúthien respectively. We look forward to settling down with this romantic take from Tolkien’s legendarium.
Amazon is giving the release date at 4th May 2017, with pre-orders already open in the UK at least.
