Where’d You Go, Bernadette

How familiar is this… you see the title flash up of one of your favourite books and you realise it’s being made into a film. You sigh. Will they ruin it? Will they cut out huge chunks? Will the actors look right? Will I wish they’d never made the film and ruined the book?

This was my first reaction when I saw that “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” was already in production, filming started last summer and it is due to be released in October this year. After a little research, no official trailer is available yet but watch this space, I became a little less anxious.

The screenplay, based on Maria Semple’s New York Times Bestseller, has been written and is directed by, Oscar Nominated and Golden Globe winner (Boyhood) Richard Linklater. Even better news, Cate Blanchett is to star as the talented yet agoraphobic architect, Bernadette. Blanchett was stunning as Carol, the title role in the adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novel of the same name in 2015.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the novel the film’s official synopsis reads “Bernadette hates people, she hates leaving the house, and more than anything, she hates the other parents at her daughter’s school. But when Bee’s mother disappears, it’s her mission to find out where she is and what really happened to her”.

I have high hopes for the film adaptation and will be keeping my eye on social media for any further news and the first trailer.
