Word of the Day – Onomatopoeia

By July 18, 2016Word of the Day

Onomatopoeia (noun)

o-no-mat-a-pee-a

The creation of a word from the sound associated with what is named (ie, cuckoo, fizz)

From Latin, and one of my favourite words. I don’t know how we haven’t had it as Word of the Day previously. I taught my children this word by making it sound like a train (o-no-ma-ta-pee-a-o-no-ma-ta-pee-a) and they still remember it as adults.

Example sentences

“I love ‘plop’, it’s such an onomatopoeia”
