Word of the Day – Roustabout

By December 9, 2016Word of the Day

Roustabout (noun)

row-sta-bowt

An unskilled labourer, rig worker, circus worker or general casual hand.

I read this word recently in Water for Elephants and I love the way it sounds! Mid 19C from the verb roust.

Example sentences

“He’s can’t eat with us, he’s just a roustabout!”

“They say the master is so tough the roustabouts all leave in a few days.”
