Word of the Day – Pansophy

By November 6, 2015Word of the Day

Pansophy (n)

pan-soff-ee

Universal or encyclopaedic knowledge; a scheme, work, or programme attempting to embrace the whole body of human knowledge.

Now chiefly historical, although I imagine the World Wide Web fulfills the word’s brief far more thoroughly than anything previously.

Example sentences

“I remember when the closest thing to pansophy you could get was an entire set of Reader’s Digest Encyclopaedias.”

“Wikipedia is our modern day go to pansophy.”
