Word of the Day – Raisonneur

By August 18, 2015Word of the Day

Raisonneur (n)

rez-uhn-ur

A character in a play, novel, or the like who voices the central theme, philosophy, or point of view of the work

I’ve always wondered what the author’s voice was called.

Example sentence

“Moliere’s used the raisonneur Béralde in La Malade Imaginaire to point out ‘it is not doctors he is mocking, but the folly of medicine’ ”

” Raisonneurs are often used in literature to clarify otherwise obscure references.”
