Word of the Day – Synecdoche

By July 26, 2015Word of the Day

Synecdoche (noun)

si-nek-do-key

A figure of speech whereby the whole replaces the part; the part replaces the whole; the species for the genus; the genus for the species; or the name of the material for the thing made.

How wonderful, a definition that is more confusing than the word.

Example sentences

“When one walks the boards rather than appearing on stage, that is synecdoche”

“It was an irksome quirk that she used synecdoche when chatting to me and my being so particular with language, I’m sure she did it purposefully”
