Crowdfunding Supports New LGBT Book Release

On Tuesday 14th February Promised Land was released to the general public after a Crowdfunding campaign raised $40,000 (NZD) to see this project come to life.

The brains, and hearts, behind the book are writers Chaz Harris and Adam Reynolds from Wellington, New Zealand, who worked tirelessly to see this inclusive fairytale land come to life along with co-illustrators Bo Moore and Christine Luiten.

Promised Land is centred around a prince and a farm boy whose friendship blossoms into a romantic love, and after the queen’s new husband threatens the world they live in, they join forces to protect the land and people around them.

The story has everything you would want from an illustrated children’s book- dashing heroes, cute sidekick, and an evil villain to defeat!

The world of children’s literature has been bereft of LGBT-inclusive relationships and themes, and it is so refreshing and heartening to see this story come to life.

The authors have explained in their book release statement:

“When I was growing up, I had no role models in stories to show me that being gay was okay… The media sent a message that Happily Ever After was not an option if you were gay. Stories, through omission, told me I was invisible, they told me that I did not exist. We often see stories as an escape, but they can also change things – the way we see the world, the way we see each other and the way see ourselves. If you don’t see yourself in stories, you don’t see yourself in the world – and it will never be a better place without you in it.”

I have ordered my copy, so as soon as it has arrived I will share it with my own son and tell you what he thinks.
