Netflix’s Matilda musical will be released this year!

As reported last year, Sony Pictures and Netflix are teaming up to bring Matilda the Musical to a wider audience. The film adaptation of Matilda the Musical will first get a full cinema and home video run exclusively in the UK before then becoming available to stream on Netflix around the world, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The adaptation was due for release April 2020 but has had to be put back to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Not much has been reported since last February but we now know who will play Matilda’s sweet and kind teach, Miss Honey.

On January 5th it was reported that British actor Lashana Lynch has been asked to join the cast as Miss Honey, with the Captain Marvel actor reportedly in final talks with Netflix to join the project.

Lynch has risen to fame over the past couple of years with her roles in James Bond movie No Time To Die where she played the first Black and female 00 agent, and Captain Marvel in which she played the fighter pilot friend of the titular character. She is bound to bring beauty, grace, and strength to the Miss Honey role.

Matthew Warchus, who previously directed the Matilda stage musical, will return to direct the film. Original playwright Dennis Kelly is adapting the screenplay, which includes music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.
