Here in the northern hemisphere the summer is coming and it’s time to start thinking about our long awaited and much deserved holidays in the sun.
The only problem with those amazing beaches abroad is the getting there, those interminable waits through check in and boarding, the flight itself and baggage collection. Ugh how on earth will we cope? With a good book of course.
We asked for your suggestions and you answered in your droves; here are your top 20 Books to Make Your Holiday Flight Fly By.

The Witches Trilogy – Terry Pratchett
I love your top choice for this poll. What better than a bit of Pratchett’s off kilter magic to keep you entertained on your journey to those azure seas and glowing sands.
The Mists of Avalon – Marion Zimmer Bradley
Second place and perfect for all you Arthurian fiction fans here is the magical legend of King Arthur, vividly retold through the eyes and lives of the women who wielded power from behind the throne.

Shantaram – Gregory David Roberts
Wow now this a weighty tome to take away with you; as one voter put it, this will see you safely from England to Australia and back again.
The Night Circus – Erin Morgenstern
Fourth place goes to Eric’s much loved tale of a competition and two competitors who might not want to compete.

Outlander – Diana Gabaldon
It’s a rare poll indeed that doesn’t feature this series. Diana’s time travelling, book hopping series is your fifth placed holiday flight read.
The Life of Pi – Yann Martel
If nothing else, this will prepare you for any untoward accidents on your journey. Pi and his crew are in a much deserved sixth place.

1Q84 – Haruki Murakami
Take the entire trilogy away with you and you’ll be collecting your luggage and heading too the beach before you know it.
The 5th Wave – Rick Yancey
Eighth place will have you panicking every time a cloud passes over you. But while the sun shines you’ll be lost in this YA Post Apoc that is good enough for all ages.

The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
Ninth place sees Katniss and Peta battling for survival in this Dystopian YA fiction that has become a staple of so many people’s bookshelves.
Fahrenheit 451 – Ray Bradbury
And completing our top ten is Fahrenheit 451, Bradbury’s classic dystopian future where books are burned and knowledge is feared is a book that many of you felt everyone should read!

13. Lady Midnight – Cassandra Clare
14. The Passage – Justin Cronin
15. The Rook – Daniel O’Malley
16. The House of the Spirits – Isabel Allende
17. Beloved – Toni Morrison
