CBeebies’ George Webster pens book celebrating “being different”

BAFTA-winning TV presenter, actor, and author, George Webster, best known for presenting with CBeebies, has penned a new children’s book that showcases that “being different is great”. George, who was born with Down Syndrome, was determined to write books that featured characters like him after growing up without seeing that representation in literature.

In 2023, George published an autobiography, following which, he collaborated with co-writer Claire Taylor and bestselling illustrator Tim Budgen for the children’s picture booksThis is Me!’ (2023), and Why Not?’ (2024).

Collaborating next with co-writer Helen Harvey and illustrator Tim Budgen, Webster published George and the Mini Dragon’ in 2025. This collaboration now continues this year with his latest publication, ‘George and the Dragons: Lava Goes Wild’, the second in the series aimed at children aged 6+.

Speaking to BBC Bitesize, George said: “I want everyone to understand that being different is great. It’s important to hear from different people’s voices, from every person’s experiences.”

In his latest book, George and his friends are back for another adventure. When they head into the magic forest on a school camping trip, they’re excited to learn survival skills and roast marshmallows. But then, Lava mysterious flies off, leaving George and his friends to work together, using special powers, to find lava.

Like his author’s namesake, the George in the book also has Down Syndrome, providing that much needed representation Webster wishes he has growing up. Also featured in his book are teaching assistants much like those who supported George. What’s more, Makaton, a sign and symbol language designed to support those who struggle with speech, also plays an important role in George’s work.

“before I spoke with words I used Makaton,” George explains.

George and the Dragons: Lava Goes Wild! is out now.
