(historical Christian Church) The adoration of the host or the bread consecrated in the Eucharist.
Early 17th century; earliest use found in Martin Fotherby (c1560–1620), bishop of Salisbury. From post-classical Latin artolatria from ancient Greek ἀρτο-, combining form of ἄρτος bread + post-classical Latin -latria.
