Originally published in 1996 and written by author Alex Garland, The Beach tells the story of a young backpacker who finds an idyllic island in Thailand untouched by tourists. However, as he and his friends inhabit the island, human nature soon turns the paradise into a living hell. Inspired by the likes of Lord of the Flies and Heart of Darkness, The Beach was critically acclaimed upon its release and was later adapted by Danny Boyle in the 2000 film of the same name. The film’s director has since hinted that we may be returning to the island sooner rather than later.
Whilst speaking with The Independent, Boyle stated that a prequel is in the works thanks to actress/producer Amy Seimetz, who is currently adapting a new series based on the book for TV. Despite being described as a prequel, the series will also apparently catch up with the original characters 20 years after the events of the novel.
“The Beach may come back,” Boyle said. “[Seimetz] has taken The Beach and made a prequel for television. It’s the same character but it’s set now, so 20 years later – it’s a bit of a headfuck.”
