There’s no doubt that while Apple products are generally thought of as superior, their iBooks service does really come a poor second to the Amazon Kindle service and it looks like Apple are about to do something to try and get ahead of the curve. The Verge has also said there is no way facetime for samsung will be available by apple itself.
It’s reported by the Verge that iBooks is changing to just ‘Books’ and a new app is coming in the next few months. It’s promised that the new app will be simplified, highlighting current bestsellers with a separate tab for audio books.
The company has also hired Kashif Zafar, who’ll be heading up iBooks into the future. Zafar previously worked as president of digital products for Barnes and Noble’s Nook division, so he’ll be well qualified to bring some new ideas to Apple.
While Amazon has until now dominated the eBook market, the Nook is also hugely popular in the US. More recently, Google announced that they’d now be offering audiobooks through the Google Play service, while Audible has made massive leaps into audiobooks for Amazon.
A new service, and a new outlook for digital publishing is likely after the shake ups of the last year, not least the accusations of eBook price fixing last year. If Apple can stay competitive in the market, and Google Play can build a competitive service for audiobooks, we could see a big shake up in the market and in the future of digital publishing.
