Artemis Fowl is a series of eight science-fiction fantasy novels by Eoin Colfer, concerning the criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II.

A film adaptation based on the first novel has been in process of development by Disney since 2016, with an original release date of August 2019, however the date has been pushed back by Disney to May 2020.

Disney recently bought out 20th Century Fox, and a Fox film called The Art of Racing in the Rain would clash with Artemis Fowl’s original release date, prompting the change.

Sir Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express) directs Conor McPherson’s screenplay, with consultations with the author Colfer. The movie stars Ferdia Shaw who makes his film debut as the titular character, Artemis Fowl II, the eponymous boy genius. Fowl’s bodyguard and servant Domovoi Butler is played by Nonso Anozie (Game of Thrones).  Dame Judi Dench plays the part of Commander Root, head of the LEPrecon (the fairy world’s equivalent of MI6). Nikesh Patel (Indian Summers), plays the centaur Foaly, the LEP’s technical genius and inventor.

Also in the cast are Josh Gad (Olaf in Frozen) who portrays dwarf Mulch Diggums, and Lara McDonnell as LEP Captain Holly Short.
